Saturday Sounds presents: Greg Howe – Jump Start

24th January, 2010 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

A little bit late today (we had a party at home) but here’s this week’s sound, inspired by a video posted by Greg Howe himself, Jump Start by the same Greg Howe from his album Introspection, enjoy:

Design the Ibanez JEM of your dreams

17th January, 2010 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

Aah, the JEM, such an iconic guitar for the fanboys like myself who relish in simple, yet elegant designs in a guitar which can be customised again and again but still retain its essence. Unfortunately, the JEM is a high level guitar and therefore one I’ve never been able to afford. But there might be hope.

Steve Vai and Ibanez have announced an upcoming contest for you (and me, umm, hopefully) to design the next JEM. This is to celebrate the 77,777 JEM to be sold (I did say they are expensive) and there will be only 2 manufactured: One for the winner and one for Steve. Check the video below:

Now if you don’t know how to design a guitar, that’s ok, neither do I, but there’s a great resource on line to come up with ideas, it’s called the VRG-Builder. It won’t allow you to do fancier designs than plain colour but it can give you a template to begin with.

If  residents outside the US can enter, I might give it a shot, as I would love to own a custom-made JEM. More on the Ibanez website, contest details have not yet been announced.

Satch presents the new Ibanez JS2400

17th January, 2010 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

I almost bypassed this one. It’s a few days old but the official Ibanez YouTube channel posted a video of Joe Satriani talking about his newest guitar which he used on a few Chickenfoot songs, the JS2400. The main new feature is the neck extending to 24 frets, which required some slight design changes on the body.

It’s a sleek looking guitar and it seems like a good choice for those looking for something giving a bit of a vintage sound with the option of staying heavy. Here’s the video below:

Now you can pre-order it from guitarguitar for £1,670 if you fancy it ;)

Saturday Sounds Presents: MC Lars – Guitar Hero Hero

16th January, 2010 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

Looking back on my YouTube favourites, it occured to me that I never got round to posting this awesome video on here. This is now rectified, and I do hope you enjoy the (real) guitar on this as I do (featured by … Paul Gilbert of course).

If you’re an avid Guitar Hero player, don’t be offended, I just really dig the guitar parts on this song \m/

Why we fence?

11th January, 2010 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

I’m currently reading Ken Mondschein’s most excellent translation of Camillo Agrippa’s Treatise On The Science Of Arms, and the introduction full of details giving lots of background information got me thinking about a few things. In it, there is a description of the social context in which those who took up the sword lived which gives an insight on why they were doing so. And while we can try to comprehend what motivates a man to learn a weapon in order to both give himself a place on the social ladder as well as giving himself the means to preserve his own life, those are motivations which no longer apply to our modern world, and yet are crucial to the approach in which fencing masters were expecting their students to learn the art.

So how do we reconcile a need for self-defense and social recognition with the friendly activity that fencing has become today? Note that I use the word “friendly” in a genuine meaning, regardless of the amount of social or political conflict that might exist within or between groups today.

Saturday Sounds presents Orianthi – Highly Strung

9th January, 2010 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

Okay here’s a new feature I’m trying out. Some folks do “Music Monday”, I’ve decided to do Saturday Sounds, a semi-regular feature to post sounds and songs that rock my world. Don’t expect it to be every Saturday, I know it won’t happen every week but I’ll try to do it as much as possible.

So let’s kick start with a collaboration between Steve Vai and Carlos Santana’s protégée, whose career was to reach a summit in the Michael Jackson comeback tour which never happened This is It, I, of course, mean Orianthi. The song is called Highly Strung and as Steve Vai puts it, it’s ferocious, check it out:

Edit from 15/01/2010: Steve Vai just posted the official music video for Highly Strung so I’ve replaced the video accordingly.

Of course Climate Data is available

8th December, 2009 - words and lyrics by Jean-Loup

Reading all the distorted nonsense that climate contrarians (I prefer that to deniers actually) put up out there, you’d think Climate Data is a dark dirty secret that only a selected cabal is able to access, interpret and publish at their own whim to create a worldwide conspiracy (to what purpose, I’m not entirely sure but anyway…)

Well the data is out there, and with the greatest global conference having opened at Copenhagen yesterday, I thought I’d put out a few links for people to check out and make their own opinions.
