Satch talks next Chickenfoot record and new Solo Album

Wednesday, May 5th, 2010

Joe Satriani & Sammy Hagar LiveThere was a buzz on over the last couple of days that Satch was working on his next solo album but little else was known. We’d also heard confirmation from Sammy Hagar that the Foot was definitely working on their next album too. Well now thanks to Music Radar who managed to get hold of Satch long enough to (gently) extract the information from him, we know both to be true.

The next Satch solo record will come out some time in the fall, no definite dates yet. As for the next Chickenfoot, well they’ve only just released their live CD/DVD so the date for the next studio album is probably still very much up in the air at the moment.

Here’s a few excerpts for a taste:

With several hours to go before soundcheck, Satriani talked to MusicRadar about the future of Chickenfoot, expressing enthusiasm about a recent group writing session (“already I can tell we’re going deeper than on the first album”). He also reveals that fans can count on a new solo record in the fall.

After decompressing for a few months and playing on the Experience Hendrix Tour, what was it like to get back with Chickenfoot to work on some new material?

“Better and easier than you might think. It doesn’t take long for us to start clicking. We got together and worked on some ideas. Actually, we had a bunch of stuff we recorded on the road last year, little bits of things. But we have four songs that are really taking shape. We’re going to take a little more time with this record – well, we kind of have to given our schedules.”

[...]

But before you do that, I understand you’re going to do a new solo record. Don’t you rest, man?

[laughs] “I do, but probably not like other people. I’m going to start the next record soon, as in a few weeks from now. Since I got off the Hendrix tour, I’ve been going through a lot of the bits and pieces and riffs I’ve collected, trying to see if they’re songs. I probably have about 30 actual song ideas, so now I have to whittle them down a bit.”

Upcoming Paul Gilbert Album: Fuzz Universe

Saturday, May 1st, 2010

Only yesterday I was thinking, it’s the end of April and so far in 2010 we’ve heard almost nothing about what Paul Gilbert is up to musically speaking. It felt a little anti climatic after the streak of activity since releasing Silence Followed By A Deafening Roar in 2008. There was the tour with Satch immediately after, then the release of United States with Freddy Nelson and the European tour with clinics in the Autumn, then in 2009 we had the short concert with Racer X at NAMM and then the much welcome reunion tour with Mr Big. More Mr Big news were hoped / expected for this year but so far we’ve not had much, they all seem to be back to doing their own things.

So it was a relief to wake up this morning to the much welcome news brought, as always, by the much resourceful Jenn, that Paul Gilbert is due to release a new (apparently instrumental once again) album, on 23rd June this year called Fuzz Universe.

There’s no cover art available nor is there a track list yet but I’ll be sure to update this  once this becomes available. For now the CD with its usual companion DVD is available for preorder at HMV Japan (not CD Japan, which explains why I’ve not heard about it from them). You can pre-order the CD here and the DVD here.

This is the exciting news of the day, cheers Jenn :D

New Music Video: Chickenfoot – My Kinda Girl

Thursday, April 29th, 2010

A couple of days late on this one but a nice tribute for women across the world, makes me wonder why they didn’t release it for International Women’s Day. Enjoy:

I’m not sure the steampunk theme really fits the words but hey it’s his creation ;)

Slash Solo Album Review

Wednesday, April 21st, 2010

I don’t normally do this sort of thing because it’s so time consuming and my inspiration to do so on new releases tends to be mostly absent. Slash‘s solo album was completely the opposite. Since I’ve acquired it with the special issue of Classic Rock, my mind’s been teeming with ideas for a review.

But before I begin, I thought I’d give some background on how much I know and don’t know the artist.

Back in 1991, when the double album Use Your Illusion came out, it took me very little time to become a huge fan of Guns n’Roses. I was 14 and this was my baptising at the altar of Rock n’Roll. A first step in an ongoing discovery in a type of music constantly changing and yet so faithful to its roots. In Gn’R while Axl was the voice of teenage pains, Slash was the man who inspired me to first pick up the guitar and try to be a musician. This too is an ongoing journey and though others have come since to bring me more intense forms of inspiration, Slash remains a rock that keeps rolling like a steamroller shaping new roads.

I heart guitar interviews Marty Friedman

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

Marty Friedman is currently on tour in Australia for various clinics and the guys at Iheartguitar have managed to catch him for a quick interview. Here’s a quick snippet:

A while back, you had a signature Ibanez guitar based off the SZ-shape. More recently you’ve been photographed playing Les Pauls. Are you still with Ibanez? And what is it about Les Pauls that does it for you?
I will play anything that sounds great and stays in tune. Believe it or not, very few guitars can do that to my scrutiny. I think Les Pauls are great looking and sounding guitars. Lately I have been playing mostly PRS and Gibson, but I play Ibanez and some others too.
