Guitar practice log – slick blues

Sunday, August 29th, 2010

Sundays at home can be a chance to have a scattered practice across the entire day, which happened to be the case today. Yesterday I picked up the September issue of Guitar Techniques to try and find new ideas for things to practice. Not that I don’t already have plenty to do but I feel like exploring new things. As it happens, the current issue has a focus on Acoustic Blues, and that suits me just fine. I found myself exploring the likes of Robert Johnson, listening to Clapton again and so on. And while I seem more and more attracted to the Blues as a genre, it’s interesting to note that some styles are more attractive to me than others. So for example, while I like Johnson’s style, I’m not so keen on Doc Watson. Perhaps it’s the bluegrass, that’s not really my kind of thing.

Anyway, back to practice, not only did I did some more Gary Moore, with a little bit more ease than last time, I found the “one minute lick” to a great little thing to practice. It’s played over A7 and uses all 12 notes but in a very cool choppy rhythm (“Swing feel”). I picked this one up surprisingly quickly, and I think the rhythm helped a lot. They recommend you analyse it and try to come up with similar ideas. I might try that if I ever find the time later.

One more thing about GT though is that I’m definitely not gonna be able to practice everything in it. The George Lynch stuff in there is insane and while I’d love to play like this, there’s no point my wasting my time trying to work it out at the minute. I may as well try to learn the whole of Fuzz Universe (the song). Still lots of tidbits to pick at so definitely worth it :)

Guitar Noize ‘Blue Noize’ video entry

Saturday, August 28th, 2010

I finally had a little time this morning and managed to record something for the Guitar Noize competition I talked about a while back. It’s not the most amazing bit of guitar playing you’ll hear among the entrants, I can promise you that but that’s the best I can offer so far and I can only hope that some people will like it as it stands. So here it is:

Guitar practice log – Chicken boy

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Unusual practice tonight. As I mentioned in my previous post, Crossroads is available to view for free on YouTube, so as I was having an evening by myself, I thought I’d watch it, not having seen more than clips of the final scene before (I confess!!). As I was really enjoying the blues playing half-way through the movie, I just picked up the guitar and played along as best I could. That wasn’t too hard mind, since most of it sounded like simple E minor. I reminded me of how I always meant to get myself a slide and never actually gotten round to doing so. Maybe next time I’m near a music store I’ll remember.

Afterwards, I just kept noodling along E minor with no particular reference point, then I switched to a little bit of chord change practice. I was gonna play along a backing track but it started getting late and I didn’t really want my little girl to wake up so I’ll leave it ’till (hopefully) tomorrow.

On a different note, I’ve now subscribed to Guitar Techniques and should be getting a free Drive pedal as a bonus. I was hesitating between a Fuzz and a Drive pedal and went through quite a few reviews on YouTube, some better than others. In the end I opted for the Drive as something about the Fuzz didn’t quite sound like a sound I’d be after. The idea is roughly trying to find licks and exercises to focus on each month to strengthen a particular technique or simply learn something short and new (So not Cliffs of Dover like I have in one of the few copies I’ve managed to find in store over the years ;) ). We’ll see if the idea will work out in the long term.

Watch cult guitar movie Crossroads – Free

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Strangely enough, in the world of movies, there seems to be little place for our favourite instument the guitar. Certainly if you were to ask me what are the most iconic movie scenes involving some sort of guitar playing, I would quote two movies: Back to the Future where Marty McFly dazzles a crowd of 1955 High School students with an overdriven version of Johnny B Goode, and Crossroads (NOT the Britney Spears movie) where young Eugene Martone Duels with Jack Butler (Steve Vai) using neither swords nor pistols, but their guitar skills.

Well despite the latter movie being rather hard to find nowadays (I have a LOVEFiLM subscription, and it’s not part of their catalogue), now you can watch it for FREE, all thanks to YouTube new streaming movie service.

A must-see for any fan of Steve Vai out there
