Take the 10:10 Pledge

A few days ago I’d noticed a new promotional campaign launched by the makers of The Age of Stupid. The promotion was called the 10:10 pledge and the page it sent you off to was just a video of a 747 being demolished then melted down to make 10:10 Keyrings, so I was a little confused at first.

Today after reading the latest entry from George Monbiot’s blog, it became clear that they’d opened up their website to be a little more explicit on what the campaign was all about.

Essentially the idea is that we can’t just wait for the government to come up with a bunch of targets for as far away as the year 2050. As encouraging as those might be, the call for action is NOW. If we want to minimise the damaging effects of runaway global climate change we must change our attitudes now But more to the point, we must not wait for the government to do something while we sit living our lives as usual, as Gandhi said, we must be the change we want to see in this world.

So here’s a simple idea, each of us who signup to the 10:10 pledge essentially commit to reducing our own individual emissions by 10% in 2010 (hence 10:10). The pledge is open to not only individuals but also (and dare I say more importantly in terms of impact) businesses.

If you’re not sure about which steps to take to achieve that, you can opt in to receive emails from them with tips on the best way to do that. Me, well, I already try to maintain as low a carbon footprint as it is but perhaps this is a good time to change the boiler in the flat :)

Go on, do something amazing, become ;)
