Thinking about the coal industry

Wednesday, August 26th, 2009

I’ve been doing a bit of pondering today and I started feeling quite sorry for the guys in the coal industry.

That’s a bit random you might think, well not really. It’s a well known fact that of all fossil fuels used in the industrialised world, coal is by far the worst of all. As a result, the industry is being constantly attacked by the likes of us who would like to see the world free from those little blocks of pure sun energy captured millions of years ago,

Time Magazine Publishes Top 10 Electric Guitar Players

Friday, August 21st, 2009

I’ve just seen this from @totalguitar, Time Magazine has put together a list of their Top 10 Electric Guitar Players of all time. Here they are in order:

  1. Jimi Hendrix
  2. Slash
  3. B.B. King
  4. Keith Richards
  5. Eric Clapton
  6. Jimmy Page
  7. Chuck Berry
  8. Les Paul
  9. Yngwie Malmsteen
  10. Prince
  11. Johnny Ramone

I know it’s a top 10 and there’s 11 entries, but that’s not the weirdest thing. What I would like to know is their criteria for selecting those 10 (well 11) because if it’s a question of skill, I can think of many players far better than some of those 10.

Granted, there’s so many to choose from that such a list will always be contentious no matter who you ask. Everyone knows I would have put Paul Gilbert as No 1 for example ;) But seriously, where is Jeff Beck? Eddie Van Halen? Mark Knopfler? Joe Perry? Angus Young? Gary Moore? (and well, obviously from my own bias, Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, Marty Friedman and so on) … the list is endless and in the long run, I’m not sure it means anything.

All I can say is I’d never heard of Johhny Ramone until now, so it can’t be based on fame :p (‘cos you know, I’m such a reliable point of reference for these things ;) )

New Chickenfoot Video – Soap On A Rope

Thursday, August 20th, 2009

When I first put the Chickenfoot CD in my player, the first song that really struck to me as being above the others definitely was Soap On A Rope, so I’m really glad they’ve decided to release it as their next single.

What’s more, this video is a great amount of fun. In fact, I can’t remember when I last laughed out loud watching a music video… well maybe for Oh Yeah! I can’t insist enough on how tremendous it is to see those 4 guys having the amount of fun they seem to be having. The music business has been so corrupted with money and other copyright and royalties issues that it’s a real bowl of fresh air to watch these guys. Don’t think I’m being naive, if you’ve not bought the Chickenfoot album, you can listen to it for free on Spotify as well as on the Chickenfoot website.

Meawhile enjoy the video :D

Steve Vai – Where The Wild Things Are DVD Preview

Tuesday, August 11th, 2009

As those of you following Steve Vai on Twitter will know, the man is working on a new DVD filmed during one of his shows at Minneapolis called “Where The Wild Things Are”. I must admit to never have been fortunate enough as of yet to see Steve play live but there is still hope. Until a new show comes along, this DVD should provide quite an idea of just how much of a show he can put together.
