Britain tests Carbon Capture Technology

I’ll admit it straight away, I’m all in favour of renewable energies such as wind, solar, wave or tidal so when I see countries like Britain, which happens to be where I live, wasting their resources trying to implement Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS), it kinda makes me cringe.

Don’t get me wrong, I think it’s a good step towards reducing emissions but it won’t do anything to wean us out of our addiction to fossil fuels. It’s a bit like a smoker trying to puff their nocious fumes into a box and bury it somewhere instead of trying to stop smoking altogether.

Not to mention that, it only captures the emissions of the power plant, there’s seemingly nothing done to capture the emissions of the engines digging for coal, of the vehicles transporting the coal and of the mechanism of storing the captured CO2. It’s almost like they’re trying to transform coal power plants into nuclear plants without the dangers of explosion and radioactive leaks.

The following is brought to you by the following article: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/scotland/edinburgh_and_east/8072583.stm, where one can read:

“There is the potential to create an industry on the same scale as North Sea Oil, and we will invest in Scotland and the UK to help to realise this potential.”

Does that not send the wrong kind of message?

Every time I cycle against the wind, I’m seeing so many missed opportunities for really clean energy.

There’s a GoogleTech Talk on the subject I will be posting here later (but I have to watch it first ;) )
