Sometimes you correlate thoughts and actions which are usually not connected at all but when you think about it a little, it can be quite interesting.
Today I've had my second guitar lesson and it opened up new things in ways I should have realised long before...
Honestly, for months and months now, I've been (admittedly not very regularly) trying to practice various scales and applying them to simple jams (no not strawberry flavoured ) but it was only working to an extent. Basically I would simply pick a "box" within a scale pattern and stay in it. Now if you try to play the scale along the neck as opposed to up and down the strings, it gives you the chance to explore other areas and use fingering techniques the box shape doesn't allow you to use necessarily. Add to this the ability to recognise root notes (still working on that one ) and the shapes of the scale you're trying to play you can then do so much more.
With this comes the ultimate cool tool (well for tonight anyway): backing tracks (or rhythm box if you have one). It's a bit like playing in a band, only without the unreliability of the drunken bass and guitar player (yes still bitter from my teenage days ). Honestly, it's like being unplugged from the Matrix, or to take a more philosophical approach, it's like coming out of the cave you've always lived in. I've always enjoyed playing you know, just taking the instrument and seeing the possibility of the sorts of music I could come up with. For years it was like trying to slowly dig through a brick wall. Did I say brick? I meant concrete. Honestly this is why I chose to take lessons in the first place because I knew there was a door somewhere.
Now I know I've only been given directions on where to find the switch that will turn on the light that will allow me to find the door. I'm guessing at one point I will have to look for the key to the door, and obviously I have no idea what's behind it (say who's GM-ing this RPG again? ). So far I'm having a great time!!
And as for similitudes, well I had been struggling with server configs and accessing ports and so on and I was thinking how one would explain to someone who's never done networking what a port was. I thought the image of the server being a sort of huge engine room with 65536 doors around it was quite appropriate. Each door being connected (somehow) to the mechanism inside the room can only be opened with a special key (and 443 is extra special). Usually door 80, 25, 23 and 21 are always open, 22 sometimes is (I tend to prefer when it is) but normally all others are pretty much closed.
And this brings me to other doors I've been trying to open this last couple of days: Search engines. I'm becoming quite keen to generate some form of revenue from this website and my saint seiya blog. So far, adsense has proven not very lucrative but that's only because I'm not getting the traffic (I know, I know, write more often, stop waffling and say something interesting that might work ). I have the basis of another potential means of revenue in the back of my mind but this won't really work if I can't get the traffic to start with. Unfortunately, the search for keywords I tried last night was pretty much inconclusive. Ultimately, beside the personal waffle, I'm hoping to be able to do more on fencing articles. In fact once I find my usb key, I'll start posting my Sainct Didier translations and hopefully I can get some feedback about those.
As always watch this space, it's my space better than myspace (Well I think so anyway) Last update : 14-09-2007 00:14
